Doom 3, Playthroughs

Doom 3: Phobos – Episode 1 released!

While I’m currently blasting my way through the Doom II mod called TNT: Revilution, it’s time to take a short break from that and focus on a brand new mod for Doom 3 called Doom 3: Phobos. I’ve been following the progress on Team Future’s for quite a while and I’m really proud of them for releasing the first episode after so many years of hard work and dedication.

A different kind of old school

I have deliberately restrained myself from learning too much about the mod and watching too many screenshots because I believe that best experience you can have is just going in blind and figure everything out as you go. One thing I do know about the mod, is that the creators are aiming for a sweet combination of action and exploration.

Our type of “old school” is a very different breed than the type encountered in today’s “old school”. Yes, there are similarities; We too have upped the action, speed and gore, but not to the extreme lengths seen in the new Doom game. Our levels are built for exploration, progression and environmental puzzles. These are our main qualities.

While I can definitely appreciate adrenaline-pumping action in shooters, it’s nice to have a couple of resting moments in between to focus on other, more relaxing tasks. It’s not always easy to find a perfect balance. Some of the older shooters nailed that concept and if I’m to believe Team Future, Doom 3: Phobos might be exactly what I’m looking for.

Phobos is closer to games like Half-Life or Dark Forces/Jedi Knight in spirit. Just like Classic Doom, these games are types of First Person Shooters that have all but vanished. We truly are a different kind of oldschool.

Let’s find out together!

I’m looking forward to play through this bad boy and I invite you to share this experience with me. I will be streaming Doom 3: Phobos – Episode 1 live on December 6 2018 on my Twitch channel. The exact hour will be announced on my Twitch channel page and my Twitter account but if I were to make a rough estimation I’d say around 11:00 a.m. UTC +0100.

After I’ve completed the mod, I’ll write a more in-depth article about my experience, a review if you were to give it a name. For now, let us first explore the world of Doom 3: Phobos and see what it’s all about.
