Introducing sector portals into Doom II: Annie

Greetings my dear retro gaming fans and content creators. This article is just a quick update to let you know that I’ve finally introduced sector portals into the maps of the second episode of Doom II: Annie.

I must admit, although I’ve seen the potential of sector portals in GZDoom, I never really explored it myself or used in my own maps. I can’t really think of a reason why, because they really add a huge visual benefit to the maps.

Let me quickly explain what sector portals are all about, in case you’re not familiar with them. Let’s take a look at the image below. As you can see, there’s a whole lot of sector based decoration above the light grey wall that is actually the ceiling of your area. Everything above it, is done through a sector portal, which is basically a room above a room.

The upper part is a separate sector with the exact shape and size of the lower sector. You can link them together and GZDoom automatically places them on top of each other if you load up the game.

Here’s another screenshot of the first map in episode 2 of Doom II: Annie, where I introduced sector portals for the very first time:

If you wonder how it is done in the editor, you can check out a replay of my live stream here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/465627671. I was really fortunate that Zanieon stopped by and helped me out to achieve this, so thanks a ton for that!

I will try to edit a part of the video and try to squeeze a short tutorial out of it. I’ll have to see if it’s possible to squeeze something decent out of it but for now you can check it out in full, fails included. 😉
